Mason Greenwood was so good during his academy days for Manchester United that he had one teammate completely jealous of his talent.
Brandon Williams has admitted that he was jealous of Mason Greenwood and James Garner during the early stages of his time at Manchester United’s academy.
Williams is now seen as one of United’s most promising players after breaking into the first-team last season, but he endured some struggles as he progressed through the ranks.
Having initially been a striker, he eventually made the transition to left-back but at first found it difficult to compete with the likes of Greenwood, who is now an England international, and Garner, who is on loan at Watford from United.
Williams told United’s official website: “I wasn’t really happy when I went to The Cliff because I was used to being in school and being the best player, but when I went there I wasn’t one of the best players really! I was down there in the bottom group.”
“Mason’s always been there [as one of the best players]. James Garner, he was up there as well. There are a few players who are not here as well now.”
“I was jealous at the time because they were skillful and everything. I think that’s why I went further back, because I was a striker but now I’m a defender.”
Last season was a hugely successful one for Williams, who made 36 appearances for United across all competitions.
The youngster also made his England U21s debut, although this season has been somewhat frustrating for him so far.
The arrival of Alex Telles has pushed Williams further down the pecking order at Old Trafford, with Luke Shaw featuring prominently.
Williams has been restricted to just two senior appearances this season, both of which came in the Carabao Cup.
However, he is still highly regarded by United and will hope to be more prominently involved as the campaign progresses.
