Rio Ferdinand believes Mason Greenwood is ‘a superstar in the making’ and described what makes him so excited over the Manchester United youngster.

Greenwood is the latest wonderkid to emerge at Manchester United, and a bright future indeed beckons.

The pacey 18-year-old made his mark by scoring a debut winner against Astana in the Europa League last year. He hasn’t looked back since then, gradually establishing himself in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Greenwood ended the campaign by joining Wayne Rooney, George Best and Bryan Kidd in an exclusive club of teenagers to score 17 goals in a single season for United.

His strong performances were enough to leave an Old Trafford icon in Ferdinand raving, with the former defender convinced of the teenager’s potential.

Ferdinand told Radio 5 Live: “He’s here to stay. He’s here for the long term. He’s a superstar in the making.

“I don’t want to add too much pressure to him, but the kid is a natural-born goalscorer and plays the game the way if you were writing a textbook. He plays it the right way. He excites me massively.”

United will play Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon for a friendly before getting their 2020/21 Premier League campaign underway by hosting Crystal Palace on September 19.
