After several confirmations from various sources, Manchester City took the first step towards the Super League withdrawal today.

It was only a matter of time for Manchester City to take a step towards their Super League withdrawal. Given that they are currently involved in the Champions League semifinals, the Citizens simply can’t afford getting kicked out of the competition. Also, Pep Guardiola’s statement from earlier today prove that he and the players are against the creation of this league. With all this pressure, the club’s owner and board made the decision official.

Manchester City is starting the procedures to step out of this project that was destined to fail as it stood. This is what the club issued on an official statement through their website: “Manchester City Football Club can confirm that it has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League.”

UEFA reacts to Manchester City’s decision.

After the announcement, UEFA’s Aleksandr Ceferin decided to issue his own statement to congratulate Manchester City for backing down. Although this confrontation is far from over, this step will go in the federation’s favor. This is what Ceferin had to say: “I am delighted to welcome City back to the European football family. They have shown great intelligence in listening to the many voices – most notably their fans – that have spelled out the vital benefits that the current system has for the whole of European football.

“From the world-beating Champions League final right down to a young player’s first coaching session at a grassroots club. It takes courage to admit a mistake but I have never doubted that they had the ability and common sense to make that decision. City are a real asset for the game and I am delighted to be working with them for a better future for the European game.”
