The Catalans are in the market to sign a new midfielder amid Frenkie de Jong’s exit talks.

Bernardo Silva has reportedly informed his agent of his desire to join Barcelona next season.

The Man City star was on Barca’s radar last summer but ended up staying at Etihad. Several reports have emerged on Barca’s efforts to sign the Portuguese star ahead of the next season, with Silva now indicating his desire to play at Camp Nou.

According to Diario Sport, Silva has asked his agent Jorge Mendes to reach an agreement with Barcelona this summer.

Silva’s contract at Man City runs until 2025, and the Premier League champions are under no pressure to sell him. According to reports from British media, the Citizens would demand at least £80m to sell the midfielder.

Silva has been a key player in Pep Guardiola’s lineup at City in the past couple of seasons. Most observers believe his dynamic style of play makes him a perfect choice for Xavi Hernandez’s system.

However, the Portuguese star’s possible move to Barca largely depends on the future of Frenkie de Jong. Manchester United are negotiating with the Catalans to bring the Dutch midfielder to Old Trafford. But Joan Laporta’s recent comments about the transfer might complicate the situation around both De Jong and Silva’s futures.

“We have no intention of selling Frenkie De Jong & he wants to stay,” the Barcelona president said on Saturday.

“Many clubs are interested in signing him because he is one of the best midfielders in the world.

“But I will do everything in my power so that he stays but resolves the salary issue.”

If United match Barca’s £69m asking price for De Jong, we will most likely see more activity on the part of the Catalans to sign Silva.
