The Man City boss referred to Gerrard’s infamous slip while defending the club’s Premier League titles last Friday.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has apologized to Steven Gerrard over remarks he made last week about the Liverpool legend.
The Spanish boss said he was sorry for his “unnecessary and stupid comments,” which referenced Gerrard’s slip against Chelsea in the 2013-14 Premier League title race. Guardiola made the comments in defense of City amid allegations of more than 100 breaches of financial rules.
Last Friday, Guardiola questioned whether Manchester City was responsible for Gerrard’s slip, saying: “I have respect for Steven – but that moment belongs to us.”
However, speaking at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of City’s huge showdown with Arsenal, Guardiola opened proceedings by revealing he has reached out to Gerrard to apologize.
“I apologize to Steven Gerrard for my unnecessary and stupid comments I said the last time about him,” he said.
“He knows how I admire him and his career, what he has done for this country that I am living and training in. I’m ashamed of myself because he doesn’t deserve it.
“I truly believe in my comments in previous press conferences to defend my club, but I didn’t represent my club well putting his name in these stupid comments.”
Guardiola made his original comments amid allegations of financial impropriety by Man City. The club has been charged with over 100 breaches of financial rules by the Premier League. An independent commission is set to pass a verdict on the allegations.
Manchester City has vehemently denied the charges and maintains its innocence. The club has also indicated that it will fight the charges and has hired a team of lawyers to represent its interests.
