Let’s take a look at the player ratings of the Bundesliga clash between Mainz and Bayern Munich at Opel Arena.

Mainz had a visit from Bayern Munich as the German champions were hoping to seal the title with a victory away from home. The local boys had a disappointing start to the campaign, losing their first six games and grabbing only six points in their first 13 games. Regardless of that, Mainz picked up speed during their latest encounters. Bo Svensson’s squad was unbeaten in their previous six matches and just two points clear of the relegation zone.

If we talk about the visiting team, Bayern’s desire to lift the Champions League trophy was crushed by Paris Saint-Germain. But, three points in this game would have made sure that they store their ninth Bundesliga title in their cabinet. With a 2-0 win last time over Bayer Leverkusen, Hansi Flick’s side were ten points clear at the top of the table, with only four games left to play. But Mainz suppressed Bayern’s objectives for today’s game with top-class performance.

The Bavarians have to wait for their title.

Mainz started the game with a bang as they surprised everyone with an early lead. Jonathan Michael latched on to a backward header from Boateng to fire a powerful volley into the frame. It was not expected from the world-class Manuel Neuer to just push the ball into the back of his own net. With just three minutes on the referee’s watch, the locals bagged a much-needed start to the game.

Near the 38th minute mark, Mwene whipped a free-kick into the Bayern penalty box. The 27-year-old Robin Quaison arched a towering header from close range past Neuer. As everyone expected, Mainz played deeper in the second half to hold on to their lead as the Flick brought in more firepower on the pitch. An injury-time goal from Robert Lewandowski could not help make things better for Bayern as they went into the tunnel disappointed.
