The Uruguay international is a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of his contract this summer.

Luis Suarez has confirmed a pre-contract agreement to join Uruguayan club Nacional on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid.

The 35-year-old striker began his senior career at Nacional in 2005, helping the club win the Uruguayan league title. He joined Dutch side FC Groningen a year later and has been in Europe ever since.

But while it’s been 16 years since Suarez left, ‘The Gunman’ remains a popular figure. Around 20,000 fans wore Suarez masks at a recent game when reports first linked him with a return, and they have now got their just reward.

The man himself, who left Atletico at the end of his contract last month, has taken to Twitter to announce his return to Montevideo.

What did Suarez say?

“First of all, I wanted to thank you for the love through all the messages that both I and my family have received in recent days, which has been impressive. That touched our hearts at this moment that we had to make a decision,” Suarez said.

“And it was impossible to waste this opportunity of playing again in Nacional and we have a pre-agreement with the club.

“In the next few hours, details will be finalized. We hope that the agreement we all want will be reached and that we can all enjoy this new stage and see each other in the coming days.”

Nacional have also confirmed the pre-agreement on social media.

Suarez returns to his boyhood club as Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer with 68 goals in 132 matches.

He has also enjoyed successful spells in Europe at Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid.
