The Rojiblancos will see two experienced figures leave the club this summer.

Atletico Madrid have confirmed Luis Suarez and Hector Herrera will not stay at Wanda Metropolitano beyond this season.

Suarez joined the Rojiblancos after a controversial departure from Barcelona in September 2020. Following an incredible 2021-22 campaign, the Uruguayan won the fifth La Liga trophy of his career under Diego Simeone.

The Spanish giants have announced they will pay tribute to Suarez and Herrera after their last home game of the season against Sevilla.

A statement from the club reads: “At the end of the game, the Wanda Metropolitano will pay tribute to Luis Suárez and Héctor Herrera, who are saying goodbye to the Red & White family today.”

Hector Herrera joined Atletico from Porto in July 2019, making a total of 77 appearances for the Madrid side. The Mexican midfielder will join Major Soccer League side Houston Dynamo this summer.

Speaking before the Sevilla clash, Simeone revealed he had spoken with Suarez over his departure in November.

“I had a chat with Luis in November, in the middle of it,” said the Rojiblancos boss.

“A long chat, hard, honest, where both sides could speak about what they saw ahead and in the present and what was necessary to compete and what was necessary from him.”

“From that chat until today, each from their position respected everything we discussed and that doesn’t happen often. For that reason I am grateful to Luis Suarez. Because the past season he was tremendous and this one he continues to be our goal-scorer. He will play tomorrow and to the people that behave like Luis, I always say ‘chapeau’.”
