Ahead of the Euro 2020, Luis Enrique spoke about Spain’s actual chances to win the tournament during the summer.

Let’s face it, Luis Enrique’s Spain National Team is far from the squad that marked an era in football between 2008 and 2012. In that period, they won two European Championships and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. They did it with arguably their most talented generation of footballers ever assembled by their country. Cut to today and the squad led by Luis Enrique is nowhere near that legendary team.

However, the Spanish manager is convinced they have what it takes to compete in the tournament next summer. In fact, the gaffer even thinks this side has a chance at winning the title. In order to do that, they will have to get through the group stage against the likes of Slovakia, Sweden, and Poland. All four national teams are part of Group E in the tournament.

Luis Enrique has high hopes for Spain.

On the day the call-up list was presented, this is what Marca picked up from Luis Enrique: “We remain a powerful brand in the world of football. Now, what are we aiming for? To draw from, and be able to, imitate those who were unique at the time and achieved something that we [Spain] had never achieved, from a position in which the players are conscious that we can be champions, of course we can.

“If we are at the level we are supposed to be – and we can even surpass it – and we keep repeating the things we know, and the level of confidence generates an upward trajectory of performance, we have the chance to achieve everything. There is no doubt. I am not afraid to face that challenge [of being labeled favorites], but we must evaluate what we are trying to do, what profile of players we have, a young team that wants to grow, that is hungry, that plays football well, that defends well…”
