The on-loan Gunners midfielder has seen a permanent switch to Fiorentina fall through.

Lucas Torreira has declared he has ‘no chance’ of staying at Arsenal after learning he has no future at the Emirates Stadium.

The 26-year-old has spent the past two seasons out on loan at Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina. He enjoyed a solid campaign for the latter last term. But while Fiorentina had a €15 million buy option in the loan deal with Arsenal, the Italian club decided not to take it up.

‘They told me I didn’t have a place’

Now Torreira, who still has another year left on his Gunners contract, must find a third new club in as many seasons after hearing he has no part in manager Mikel Arteta’s plans.

“There is no chance. From the beginning they told me I didn’t have a place,” he told El Telegrafo about his Arsenal future.

“I don’t want to stay either because I suffered a lot. It cost me a lot to adapt and my idea is to go to Italy or Spain. What I wanted was to stay at Fiorentina, but it didn’t happen for various reasons, so we’ll look for a new direction.”

Torreira joined Arsenal in 2018, and while he enjoyed a fine start under former coach Unai Emery, things went downhill after a change in the dugout and an ankle injury in March 2020.

The Uruguay international has made 89 appearances for the Premier League club, supplying four goals and six assists, on route to an FA Cup winner’s medal in 2019/20.
