The Reds will return to Premier League without one of their main attackers.
Darwin Nunez hasn’t trained with Liverpool ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash against Brighton.
Nunez scored for the Reds when they drew 2-2 against Wolves on Saturday.
The Uruguayan star displayed a solid performance in the FA Cup stalemate. But he won’t be able to play for his side in their next league game.
According to Daily Mail, Nunez has suffered a “minor injury” in training which rules him out of the Brighton clash.
The Uruguay international joins Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Roberto Firmino on the list of injured Liverpool forwards. His absence will most likely secure a start for Cody Gakpo, who will play his Premier League debut against the Seagulls.
Gakpo will provide more depth for Liverpool’s attacking line while competing for game time against Nunez, who’s also spending his debut season at Anfield.
Since arriving from Benfica on a £64.2m transfer, Nunez has scored ten goals for the Reds across all competitions. His performances are yet to peak under Jurgen Klopp. But Premier League legend Alan Shearer believes the 23-year-old has enough potential to live up to expectations at Anfield.
“Nunez is a modern forward in the same kind of mould as Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane rather than a traditional centre-forward, and he is certainly not a goalscoring freak like Haaland,” he told the Athletic.
“But then, who is? It wasn’t too long ago that a goal every other game would be viewed as a fine return for most players and perhaps Haaland, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have changed the way we view that.
“But they are outliers, not the norm. Not everybody can do it.”
