Liverpool are not ready to rule out the prospect of adding a new defender to their ranks during the January transfer window, according to David Ornstein.

Liverpool may have lost Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season due to an ACL injury, as the Dutchman prepares to undergo surgery on his knee.

The 29-year-old center-back picked up a severe injury after a terrible tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during the weekend’s Merseyside Derby.

After the confirmation of surgery arrived, Van Dijk was left out of Liverpool’s 25-man Premier League squad, leading to speculations he could be out for the remainder of the season.

Some reports have already named Brighton & Hove Albion’s Ben White as the possible transfer target for the Reds, though they have been quoted £50million by the Seagulls.

Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly is always an option for Jurgen Klopp, but convincing Aurelio De Laurentiis to drop his staggering £80million seems to be rather daunting.

According to Ornstein of The Athletic, the reigning Premier League champions are still deciding whether to dip into the market this winter or not.

“The big question is how Liverpool will react, with many eyes on the January transfer window.

“As far as I know, that level of conversation is yet to take place internally.

“They won’t make a snap call on the matter.

“They won’t rule out a January signing, but as things stand, I don’t sense it’s likely. January is always a tricky market, prices are high, availability low. We don’t know what finances Liverpool will have at their disposal.

“A player coming in would need time to adapt. They wouldn’t just have to be at Liverpool’s level, they’d have to be an improvement on what Liverpool already have.

“Liverpool aren’t normally a checkbook club in this sense. They don’t throw money at these problems.

“Yes, they signed Van Dijk himself and Alisson for big money, but I think we’d all agree they were needed, and it was money well spent.”
