The Red Devils suffered a humiliating defeat against their arch-rivals.
Erik ten Hag has bemoaned Manchester United’s lacklustre display in their historic defeat against Liverpool.
The Red Devils went into the game as favourites due to their brilliant run of results in recent weeks.
Ten Hag’s men were even arguably the better side throughout the first period. But a goal from Cody Gakpo changed the course of the game two minutes before the break.
The Reds went on to score six more goals through Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino to claim a 7-0 win over their arch-rivals.
Man Utd suffered their worst-ever defeat in the Premier League as their backline crushed under Liverpool’s attacking pressure.
“The second half is… unprofessional that is not Manchester United,” Ten Hag said post-match.
“I saw 11 individuals losing their heads. That is not Manchester United, we have higher standards. We let the fans down, that’s what makes me the most annoyed.”
Asked whether he was angered by his side’s performance, the Man Utd boss said: “Yes. Definitely. I am surprised because I have seen the last weeks and months this team is resilient and has a winning attitude.”
He added: “We didn’t track back and it was really unprofessional. We have seen in the past we can bounce back. After Brentford, after Manchester City. This is definitely a strong setback and is unacceptable. I’m really disappointed and angry about it.
“It is a reality check. We have to take this strong.”
The Red Devils have three days to digest the defeat before their clash against Real Betis in the Europa League’s last-16 round.
