Anfield Road gave us a fresh Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton on Saturday. We have tonight’s surprising player ratings.

Liverpool and Everton met at Anfield Road with the memory of the previous Merseyside Derby still fresh. Back then, Goodison Park was where the Reds’ nightmare of a season began after Virgil van Dijk suffered a horrific knee injury. Ever since that happened, Klopp’s side has been on the short end of the stick all the time. If Everton wanted to make history by winning at Anfield for the first time in 22 years, this was the perfect day to do so.

Carlo Ancelotti completely revolutionized the Toffees and today was the moment for him to prove it. As Liverpool came to this match with a negative dynamic, Everton drew first blood and they didn’t stop there. James Rodriguez delivered a fantastic assist in the first half for Richarlison’s opening goal. As an Italian manager, Ancelotti decided to protect the result but still willing to score the second goal from a counter-attack. The Reds risked everything to get back in the game and they lost.

A controversial penalty.

Close to the end of the match, Trent Alexander-Arnold committed a foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin that even VAR had to verify. Even if the replay didn’t show an actual penalty, Liverpool simply has terrible luck this season. After the decision was confirmed, Gilfy Sigurdsson stood in front of Alisson Becker to make history.

Even though Liverpool is going through a tough time, losing against Everton at home certainly wasn’t in Jurgen Klopp’s plans this evening. Recovering from this blow will be incredibly difficult for the Reds as Merseyside turns Blue at Anfield for the first time since 1999. With this result, the Reds lag behind with 40 points and the Toffees reach the same number. The Premier League keeps surprising us with nights like this.
