Lionel Messi’s camp has issued a warning statement responding to La Liga’s decision to support Barcelona’s claim for a €700million release clause to remain in force.
Lionel Messi seems to be hell-bent on arguing La Liga’s optic to back Barcelona’s efforts to force him to stay at Camp Nou for another season.
The Argentinean has recently submitted a transfer request after enduring another heartbreaking campaign in Catalonia.
Determined to obstruct their best player’s attempts to broker his way out of the club, Barcelona have contacted La Liga to dispute Messi’s claims.
Having received a positive response from the Spanish governing body, Josep Maria Bartomeu and Co have grown confident of keeping hold of their headline performer.
Messi on his end is eager to prove his point and has released a statement through his father-agent Jorge, second-guessing La Liga’s verdict.
“We do not know which contract they have analyzed and what are the bases on which they conclude that the same contract with a ‘release clause’ would be applicable in the event that the player decided to unilaterally terminate the contract, with effect from the end of the 2019/20 season,” it read [via Marca].
Jorge Messi also took a swing at La Liga president Javier Tebas.
“This is an obvious error on your part,” the statement continued.
“It is obvious that the compensation of €700 million provided in the previous clause is not applicable at all.”
Messi will face an uphill task of fulfilling his wish of reuniting with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City as things stand right now.
Neither side is willing to step back from their stance, with the frustration boiling over on both ends.
A definite solution seems unlikely to be found anytime soon.
