The Polish marksman missed out on earning his first Ballon d’Or despite enjoying his most productive season and winning the treble.

Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinze Rummenigge insists France Football denying Robert Lewandowski the chance to the 2020 Ballon d’Or has left ‘a hole in the roll of honor for the best player in the world.’

Lewandowski was inarguably head and shoulders above all the other players in 2019/20, being a linchpin in a star-studded Bayern Munich team that conquered Europe.

In 304 appearances for the German giants in total so far, the striker has 261 goals 55 of which came last season.

He fell just two goals shy of matching Cristiano Ronaldo‘s record of most goals in a Champions League campaign as he notched up an astounding 15 goals, apart from 6 assists, in just 10 games en route to winning the trophy.

The 32-year-old Pole’s remarkable red-hot scoring for has continued this season, with 15 goals and five assists already amassed in 15 games across all competitions.

“Robert was the best of them all in 2020. He scored a lot of goals and won five trophies,” Rummenigge told Tuttosport. “It was really impossible to do better than him.

“I called Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, and point out that it’s not nice that in 2020, without the Ballon d’Or, there will be a hole in the roll of honor for the best player in the world.

“The most important leagues, despite the coronavirus, have come to an end and the strongest players have made a difference even during the time of Covid-19. Lewandowski most of all.”
