Robert Lewandowski has made the case for himself for this year’s Golden Ball in the light of a treble-winning season with Bayern Munich.
It was not an unreasonable request from Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge when he appealed to France Football to reconsider their decision of canceling the 2020 Ballon d’Or.
Considered the most prestigious individual accolade in football, the Ballon d’Or has largely been a competition between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for some time now.
While Ronaldo and Messi were also in contention to win the award this year, neither of them had a case as strong as Robert Lewandowski.
Lewandowski found the back of the net a remarkable 55 times across just 47 matches. His heroics helped Bayern lift the Champions League, Bundesliga, and DFB-Pokal with him being the top-scorer in each of the competitions.
However, France Football decided against handing out the esteemed award this term due to the COVID-19 pandemic making it an ‘unfair playing field’.
“Myself,” replied Lewandowski when asked who would he have awarded the 2020 Ballon d’Or during an interview with Polish outlet Sportowe Fakty.
“We won everything we could with Bayern. In every competition: Bundesliga, German Cup, and Champions League, I was the top scorer.
“I understand that the pressure of other parties on another player may be greater. But it’s not like every footballer would win the Golden Ball by achieving what I do?”
