The Argentine icon landed the 2021 Ballon d’Or in close competition with Lewandowski.

Robert Lewandowski insists he harbours no grudge against Lionel Messi after their controversial race for the 2021 Ballon d’Or.

Many observers backed Lewandowski to win his first Ballon d’Or by beating Messi. But the Argentina captain claimed his record-extending seventh prize by beating him in a close race.

The prize came after Messi led Argentina to the Copa America trophy last year. The Paris Saint-Germain superstar prepares to make a final push to win the World Cup in Qatar.

The Albiceleste will face Poland in the group stage as Messi faces Lewandowski once again. But the Barcelona striker says everything is “fine” between him and Messi.

Asked whether he would shake hands with Messi before the game, he said: “I don’t exactly understand the question.

“Why not? Why would I need to shake hands? Between me and Messi, everything is fine. I have nothing [bad] with him, I never had.

“Leo Messi is in great shape. At Barcelona, you can see everywhere he’s a legend.”

Poland will kick off their World Cup campaign with a match against Mexico on Tuesday. Lewandowski and co will then meet Saudi Arabia and Argentina in their next group-stage games.
