Owen Hargreaves has urged Manchester City to pull out all the stops to beat Barcelona in signing Lautaro Martinez as a Sergio Aguero replacement.

Lautaro’s future has been under the scope for several months as Barcelona search for a successor to Luis Suarez, who turned 33 in January.

The Inter Milan striker has been in sparkling form this season, scoring 21 goals in 48 games across all competitions. It’s not surprising, therefore, why interest in him is so immense.

But it turns out Barcelona may have some unwelcome competition in the form of Manchester City, who should be able to outbid them for Lautaro.

Of course, Pep Guardiola has every reason to pursue a striker of Lautaro’s caliber as Sergio Aguero’s contract at City will expire next year and Hargreaves believes the Argentine would be perfect.

“I know Manchester City are looking for a replacement for Aguero, Martinez is your guy,” the ex-Man City & United midfielder told BT Sport.

“He’s got everything. He’s skillful, a lethal finisher. He’s got everything – [he’s just] 22 years old.

“He’s the type of player whether at Barcelona or Manchester City they’re going to get a really special player.”

There have been reports lately, though, that City may offer Aguero a one-year contract extension to entice him into staying.

The 32-year-old striker is the club’s all-time record scorer on 254 goals in 370 games and, in many ways, is irreplaceable no matter whether fellow South American Lautaro or somebody else arrives.
