After last week’s electoral delays announcement at FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta explains why this decision is so detrimental for the club’s future.
Electoral delays in the FC Barcelona election process for a new president were announced last week and Joan Laporta isn’t happy about it. As the top contender to win the president, thinking this was done on purpose by his adversaries is inevitable. However, the reasoning behind this decision is fair because we are all going through an unprecedented global pandemic.
Supporters simply can’t risk their lives to elect a president from a new club, but not having a new president is also a major problem. Laporta himself explained the reason not having elections soon can be extremely dangerous for the club’s future. It all involves a single player and his recent desire to leave. We are obviously talking about Lionel Messi.
Laporta fears Leo Messi will leave.
Leo Messi and his family expected to have a new president before the month of March but this delay complicates everything. As we all know, Leo isn’t happy with the club’s crisis and getting it fixed is an urgent matter. If the incoming president wants to convince Leo to stay, he must construct a new project from the ground up first. Laporta said the following on Catalunya Radio’s RAC1.
“The electoral delays harm the possible renewal of Leo. The other clubs can see this situation. An audit has to be done before making the offer of a renewal. This situation doesn’t benefit Barcelona at all because, I insist, we need him. I was always in favor of doing the vote as soon as possible,” Laporta confirmed. Barcelona can’t exist without a president any longer. Whatever is done, it must take into account the purity of the process so there are no challenges. But I will abide by the decisions they make, the management board has the authority, not the candidates.”
