Frank Lampard has revealed who will be Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper for the upcoming set of domestic and European fixtures.
Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy are going head-to-head for a starting spot between the sticks at Stamford Bridge.
After failing to live up to the £71.6million Chelsea forked out to sign him from Athletic Bilbao in 2018, Kepa is now facing the prospect of playing understudy to Mendy.
The 28-year-old shot-stopper arrived from Rennes for £22million in the summer to provide competition to the Spaniard.
But, it didn’t take long for the Senegal international to benefit from Arrizabalaga’s comical errors and become the Blues No.1 keeper.
At least that’s what Frank Lampard feels is the better choice at the moment.
After seeing Mendy preserve a clean sheet against Sevilla, the English manager has decided to hand him a regular starting berth.
Asked if the summer signing is his first choice, Lampard replied: “At the moment, yes, he’s shown his quality.
“The way he’s played, he’s played very well. That’s two clean sheets for him already,” he continued, as per the Daily Mail.
“As it stands, he is [first choice], but that’s always up for grabs. But the way he’s playing, I’m very happy.”
Mendy played a starring role in denying Sevilla a goal at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
He pulled off a couple of stunning saves to prevent the likes of Nemanja Gudelj and Lucas Ocampos from getting on the scoresheet.
The level of security the Senegalese goalkeeper managed to provide on the Champions League night was a sharp contrast to a weekend nightmare when Chelsea were held to a 3-3 draw to Southampton.
