Frank Lampard was ‘very, very pleased’ with new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy despite his Chelsea debut ending in defeat.

Mendy made his long-awaited first appearance in goal for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup last-16 clash with Tottenham on Tuesday after completing his big-money move from Rennes last week.

Despite a quiet opening period to his Chelsea debut, he responded quickly to deny Erik Lamela. He notably claimed crosses inside the box, and pulled off a fine save from Sergio Reguilon.

The Senegal international was, though, unable to prevent Lamela’s equalizer after Timo Werner put the Blues in front. He couldn’t save a spot-kick either, as his side exited the competition on penalties after finishing 1-1.

Nonetheless, Lampard was impressed with Mendy.

“I thought he was very good. He made a couple of good saves, one particularly good save,” said the Chelsea boss on the club’s website.

“He came and caught a few balls, even the one where he came and didn’t catch, the idea that he wants to be positive is not a bad thing.

“Very, very pleased with every part of his game, really.”
