Frank Lampard has delivered his verdict on Chelsea’s newest signings Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva.

Chelsea have so far produced a relentless spending campaign. They dished out £80m on the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner in the early stage of the market.

The likes of Malang Sarr and former Barcelona starlet Xavier Mbuyamba followed quickly after.

After reinforcing his attacking department, Frank Lampard has swiftly turned his attention towards a leaky backline.

Ben Chilwell arrived from Leicester City for £50million, while Thiago Silva came in as a free agent to support Lampard’s efforts to shore up his defensive woes.

Chilwell arrives at Stamford Bridge on the back of a remarkable season at the King Power Stadium.

The 23-year-old Englishman racked up three goals and three assists in 27 Premier League outings for the Foxes.

He’s now expected to nail down the left-back position as his own, with one of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri heading towards the exit.

Lampard has refused to hide his delight for having Chilwell in his ranks.

“With Ben Chilwell, he is a player I know very well, he has been pretty much England’s first-choice left-back now in recent times,” the boss told the club’s official website.

“Great qualities in terms of how he can join in, he is athletic, his physicality, the way he plays and the quality of his left foot.

“So, for us in terms of how he can help out on the left side, attack-wise and defensively, which, of course, is always first and foremost, I am excited to work with him.

“So, I think he is a great addition. At 23 years of age, it is a really positive one for us.”

Thiago Silva, who dropped into a free-agent pool after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired, will challenge Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma for a place in the starting XI.

Expected to bring a wealth of experience after a trophy-laden PSG career, Silva should be a massive boost to Lampard’s defensive options.

The English manager is excited to be granted the opportunity to work with the 35-year-old next season.

“With Thiago Silva, we are looking at a player I know very well, pretty much as we all do.

“He brings great experience for us, he is still playing at a massively high level, as we saw in the Champions League final and games towards the final.

“I expect him to come and bring that, bring his experience, leadership, and his qualities. It is going to be very important for us.”
