After Memphis Depay’s recent statements, Ronald Koeman reacted by revealing the truth behind his negotiations with Barcelona.

Ronald Koeman’s relationship with Memphis Depay is no secret, they are really close to getting back together at FC Barcelona. The Dutch forward had the choice to accept way bigger offers than what the Catalan club is giving him. He had at least two €10 million per-annum options that he rejected for the €6 million he will make as a Blaugrana. But why is this? What is making Memphis Depay put his relationship with Koeman before millions of euros? In order to understand this, we need to go back in time to an era where Depay wasn’t going through his best moment.

There was a time in which he was considered Manchester United’s hottest new transfer but he wasn’t able to prove anything. In fact, his off-the-pitch issues started to become more prominent and they distracted him from his biggest objective. As soon as Ronald Koeman landed in the Netherlands’ managerial job, he knew he needed to help Memphis. We are talking about the most talented offensive player the Dutch have produced since Arjen Robben, Robin Van Persie, or Wesley Sneijder.

Koeman confirms Depay is close to an announcement.

As it turns out, Ronald Koeman is currently in Groningen to celebrate his father. Who is a legend at the club. He was obviously asked about Memphis Depay’s chances to play at FC Barcelona and confirmed the player’s recent statements. Sport reported the response from the Dutch manager earlier today: “Memphis said something about his future and I can confirm it.

“As far as I know, negotiations are advanced and ongoing. He hasn’t signed anything yet but it’s really close. I wanted to sign him back in January and coming to play for us now would be great. I also spoke to Gini (Wijnaldum) about his transfer to PSG. In the end, he had to make a decision. His choice was related to FC Barcelona’s situation at the time (referring to their lack of resolve to confirm Koeman as the manager).”
