The Catalan giants have the opportunity of rising to the top of the table if they win their game in hand over the other title contenders.

Ronald Koeman admits Barcelona are in “an unexpected situation” in the La Liga title race as they are strong favorites to end up as winners.

Barcelona struggled with consistency in the first half of the season, with the team losing four and drawing as many of their first 15 league matches.

Since the turn of the year, however, they have been a team transformed, with the Catalan giants winning 15 of their 17 league games in 2021.

This incredible turnaround of form has helped Barca go within touching distance of the top of the table. They currently sit at third in the standings with 71 points from 32 games, level on points with second-placed Real Madrid and just two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid having played a match fewer than both sides.

“It’s one game at a time. If you look back, it’s an unexpected situation,” Koeman told reporters, via Marca.

“We had a big points difference and it’s something big that we’ve achieved, the opportunity to fight to win LaLiga.

“In the last 17 games, almost half of the season, we have 15 wins. That’s impressive. And it had to be like this, because otherwise we wouldn’t be fighting for the title.”
