The Reds have lost two of their senior center-halves to long-term injuries with another one finding it hard to shake off fitness troubles.
Jurgen Klopp ‘can’t really say anything’ about Liverpool’s plans for the January transfer market despite the urgent need for defensive reinforcement in the team.
Virgil van Dijk ruptured his ACL back in October and has remained out of action since then. The Dutchman is expected to miss the majority of the second half of the season, and so is Joe Gomez who was forced to undergo surgery for a serious knee injury in November.
Joel Matip‘s struggles to remain fit continues, and Klopp has been forced to use midfielder Fabinho at center-back.
Academy products Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips have also been handed minutes at the heart of the Reds defense.
With the team going through an injury crisis, former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher urged the champions to act in the transfer market saying that signing a central defender is ‘paramount’.
“We have solutions in the squad obviously but we struggled still with injuries. For most of the time with the center-half position, it can happen like this – when it starts, it does not stop,” Klopp told reporters, via Goal.
“We have solutions with the squad but if we can do something in the window, I don’t know. It is like that.
“It is a very difficult transfer window, as you can imagine. Not all of the clubs have real money. Just doing something makes no sense. Doing the right thing makes sense. So far, we have really liked what we have done.”
