Jurgen Klopp was relieved that none of his players picked up a fitness issue while assessing Liverpool’s performance against Aston Villa.

Liverpool hit a new low over the weekend as they were handed their worst defeat since 1963 at the hands of Aston Villa away from home.

The Reds’ 7-2 defeat also marked the first time in almost 70 years that a defending champion let in more than six goals.

Alisson Becker and Jordan Henderson were forced to sit out the match with injuries, and the absence of their first-choice goalkeeper and the captain proved a gap too big to fill for them.

Ollie Watkins netted a hat-trick, Jack Grealish found the back of the net twice, while John McGinn and Ross Barkley also contributed to the misery of Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Klopp acknowledged that his players were far from their usual selves in the match but he took the lack of an injury for any of them as the only positive takeaway.

“The only good news actually is nobody was injured after the game,” Klopp said post-match, via the official club website.

“I said it in the beginning and it’s true, Aston Villa did really, really well, but we helped as well. This game then has its own dynamic and then influence goes in that direction, one team is flying and the other team is obviously not flying.

“We know that, that’s how things can happen – but it should not happen. That’s not us.”
