After midfield supremacy for the whole season, Chelsea’s Jorginho has won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award.

Chelsea star Jorginho has won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award in the wake of his performances for both club and country.

It seemed pretty obvious that the Italy international was on the verge of the prestigious prize after what he did throughout last year. Jorginho was undoubtedly the most important player in the centre for the Blues as they lifted the Champions League trophy. Besides this feat, Jorginho also helped his nation Italy to come out victorious at Euro 2020.

N’Golo Kante and Kevin De Bruyne were the other two nominees for the Player of the Year award. Both players enjoyed a good season with Chelsea and Manchester City respectively. However, Jorginho’s heroics at both club and country level were far more superior. Ultimately, the Italian snatched the prize with ease.

Winners for other prizes?

UEFA handed out other similar awards during the Champions League group stage draw. It was logical that Chelsea was a dominant force for the entirety of the campaign. Edouard Mendy has been named as Goalkeeper of the Year, whereas, Kante has won the Midfielder of the Year award. On top of that, the Coach of the Year prize went to Thomas Tuchel after a brilliant tactical season with Chelsea.

In the meantime, Manchester City’s Ruben Dias won the Defender of the Year award and Erling Haaland came out as Europe’s best forward of the season. Both men showed incredible displays with their teams during the course of the last campaign.

Apart from these, the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award has been rewarded to Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas. And Women’s Coach of the Year award goes to Lluis Cortes.
