Jack Grealish is not fully recovered from his recent injury but is close to making a return to action, says Aston Villa boss Dean Smith.

According to Dean Smith, Jack Grealish could make his return from injury just before the end of March.

The Villa captain sustained a lower leg injury last month that has since kept him on the sidelines. So far, he has missed games against Leicester, Leeds, Sheffield United, and Wolves from which Villa claimed four points to take them to ninth in the standings.

Fortunately, Grealish has now recovered from the injury but the weekend will come too soon for a return to action. The midfielder is said to have fallen ill in the course of the week.

Speaking ahead of his side’s game with Newcastle on Saturday, Villa boss Dean Smith gave an update on the 25-year-old.

He said to the club’s website: “Jack has been making really good progress and we are happy at where he’s at but, unfortunately, he won’t make it [Friday’s game]”

“He has been ill this week so he’s been off for a couple of days as well, but we’re hopeful for the Tottenham game now, that’s for sure.”

“Jack is still in and around the training ground. He takes part in the meetings. He’s got a voice and an opinion, which is good.”

Aston Villa’s form has dropped of late, with only four wins from their last ten games, losing four of them as well.

“Like most teams at the moment, we’ve been a little bit inconsistent with results recently” Smith continued.

“I’d have certainly taken that [ninth place with games in hand] at the start of the season. I’d have never accepted it because I’ve always got a belief that you can go and do well, but we have progressed a lot quicker than we thought we would this season.”

Villa could be boosted with the news that Grealish could be available for selection when they take on an in-form Tottenham on the 21st of March.
