Lionel Messi shared a heartfelt message on social media after surpassing Pele for the record of most goals scored for a single club.
With almost every goal, Lionel Messi seems to be setting a new record for himself of late.
His latest one sealed a 3-0 win for Barcelona over Valladolid and a big milestone for him in the process.
With his strike, Messi surpassed Pele’s record of the most goals for a single club as he netted his 644th goal for Barcelona.
Pele scored 643 goals in 19 seasons for Santos in Brazil between 1956 and 1974.
Messi has now done one better and it would indeed take a while for anyone to come close to that record.
Just last week, Pele sent a message to La Pulga after he equaled his goal record of 643 at the time.
Messi was clearly delighted to further write his name in the history books and sent out a message on Instagram after the game.
“When I started playing football I never thought I would break any records.” the Barca captain wrote.
“And even less the one that I achieved today which belonged to Pele … I can only thank everyone who helped me over the years, my teammates, my family, my friends and everyone who supports me every day.”
With the victory, Barcelona moved up to fifth in La Liga and would welcome Eibar to the Camp Nou next on the 29th of December.
