Former Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti confessed he was wrong to doubt ‘champion’ Romelu Lukaku following the striker’s impressive debut campaign.

Lukaku has been a man reborn ever since swapping Manchester United for Inter last summer, scoring 31 goals in 49 games across all competitions.

The Belgian striker made the record books in Inter’s quarter-final win over Bayer Leverkusen on Monday by becoming the first player to score in nine successive Europa League matches. He also became the club’s first player to score six times in a row in the competition.

Lukaku has, without a doubt, proven a more than worthy replacement for Mauro Icardi with even Moratti having to admit it.

The former Inter president told Quotidiano Sportivo: “I got it wrong on Lukaku,”

“In all honesty, I thought he was just physically strong and feared we would regret losing Icardi. Instead, Romelu is a champion, always helps his teammates and has a good vision of the play.

“Antonio Conte was right to demand his signing and then did so well to improve him. Winning the Europa League won’t be easy, as there are four very competitive sides left, but I do hope Inter can be the next Italian club to lift a European trophy.”
