Roy Keane did not hide his disappointment at Tottenham after their defeat to Leicester City. He was particularly critical of Serge Aurier.
Roy Keane did not spare Serge Aurier in his assessment of the game after the defender gave away a needless penalty against Leicester City.
The 27-year-old aimlessly pushed Wesley Fofana inside the box and allowed Jamie Vardy to score from the spot and put Leicester 1-0 up going into the break. It was a bad day at the office for Spurs as the game ended in a 2-0 defeat to see them lose ground in the title race.
Mourinho was quick to defend Aurier after the game but that did not stop the criticism from pundits.
Discussing the incident, former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink described the foul as a rugby tackle.
He told Sky Sports: “It is just a really silly challenge. [Moussa] Sissoko loses a header that he can’t, and this, I’ve got no words for it, why in God’s name do you need to do this?”
“It’s a rugby tackle. You don’t do that. He’s trying to push the opponent out of the way, but he’s forgetting he’s out of the box. There are no words for that. It’s a rugby tackle.”
Manchester United legend Keane gave his own assessment of Aurier by saying: “There is a word – madness.”
“I want to be careful what I say about this defender, I’ve been on this road before with him.”
“Utter madness. There is no danger, he’s not in on goal, he’s not looking at the ball… an experienced player, madness.”
When asked by Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones what Aurier was thinking, Keane replied: “He doesn’t think, this lad doesn’t think.”
Aurier and Spurs will be aiming to bounce back from defeat and back to winning ways when they take on Stoke City in the EFL Cup quarter-final on Wednesday.
