Having been inefficient in the final third of the pitch throughout 2020-21, the Germany international continued that trend in his first pre-season match.

Timo Werner could’ve been “more decisive” in Chelsea’s win in the north London derby on Sunday, admits Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Mind Series friendly at the Emirates Stadium, with Kai Havertz and tammy Abraham getting the job done for the visitors.

The victory could have been a much bigger one for the Blues had Werner been wearing his shooting boots as the striker missed several chances.

The former RB Leipzig moved to Stamford Bridge with a reputation of being one of the best finishers in Europe but largely struggled to maintain that reputation in his debut season in the Premier League, scoring just 12 goals from 52 games in 2020-21.

“I hope not,” responded Tuchel when asked if Werner’s lack of goals is going to be an ongoing problem, via Football London.

“He had an assist and we talked and analysed last season often enough given his situation. Nothing has changed so far.

“He had a so-so Euros with Germany but that was a concern of the whole team, not his personal problem. Then he had some days off and it’s on him, like always, to show his quality and ability.

“It’s very hard with the first 45 minutes after a tough week that we put into the players, it’s not easy for the players to like at this kind of level. I was happy.

“He was dangerous and there were chances when he could’ve been more decisive. He could’ve scored and got another assist.”
