Ex-United man Dimitar Berbatov says Chelsea got themselves a great signing in Kai Havertz but largely overpaid for the German.
Chelsea have so far spent big this summer and pressure will be on them to perform next term. All eyes will be on Kai Havertz as well.
The Blues made lots of high-profile signings this summer but none cost as much as the German.
Havertz cost Chelsea an initial €80m in a deal that could further rise by €20m. He penned paper with the Blues on a five-year deal.
The player has shown his quality with Bayer Leverkusen and was ready to take on a bigger challenge.
Given the player is still only 21, some called Havertz a ‘bargain’ signing by Chelsea. Another section of fans feel the Blues overpaid for a player who isn’t yet the finished article.
Berbatov is on the latter side and believes Chelsea paid an unnecessary amount to sign the German midfielder. Regardless, he doesn’t doubt the quality of the 21-year-old.
“I think the amount of money spent on Kai Havertz was a little too much for my taste,” he told Betfair.
“It’s ridiculous, it’s too much money. Havertz is a great talent, and I have said that in the past, I am a big fan of his and with my Leverkusen connection I was keeping a keen eye on him every week, but still the money that they have paid is crazy.”
“He’s a great signing for the team, along with Timo Werner, and they certainly have the talent to challenge for the title next season, but the test is going to be a big one for them.”
“His vision of the game, his positioning, that pass in the final third he can deliver, his finishing and his intelligence are all things that we will see from him in a Chelsea shirt.”
Berbatov also added that Havertz will relish having his Germany teammate Timo Werner with him at the club.
“It will also be a big help that he has Werner in the dressing room with him,” he added.
“When you go to a new place and you have a team mate who is the same nationality, or someone that has played in the same league as you previously, it is massive help ‘It feels easier to fit in and he won’t be the only new boy there.”
