In the ongoing saga of Harry Maguire’s off-field poor choices, the lawyers secured a much-needed win for the Manchester United captain.
Gareth Southgate did his best to keep hold of Harry Maguire. The England manager included him in his squad and only dropped him until he was handed felony charges.
In the midst of all, Maguire has retained a stance of innocence. The Three Lions defender shared that his sister was drugged which started it all.
The story did not play in Greek courts, which found the former Leicester City man guilty on all charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and repeated attempts at bribery.
There is some positive news for Maguire as his lawyers were able to score a much-needed win for him. In an appeal to a higher court, the 21 months and 10-day sentence was removed from his file and the case will be retried in a higher court.
“An appeal against yesterday’s verdict was lodged this morning by Harry’s legal team. In accordance with the Greek judicial process, the filing of an appeal extinguishes the initial court verdict and nullifies the conviction,” Manchester United’s statement on the case was reported by Metro.
“The appeal has been accepted and will lead to a full retrial in a more senior court. This means that Harry has no criminal record and is once again presumed innocent until proven guilty. Accordingly, he is not subject to any international travel restrictions.”
While Southgate dropped Maguire from his England squad, there is more trouble for him on the horizons. It has been reported that United are also contemplating removing him as captain of the squad.
