Danny Mills believes Manchester United could be doing Harry Maguire a favor by stripping him of captaincy.

Harry Maguire’s off-pitch shenanigans could somewhat impact some events on the pitch.

Initially selected for the England squad, manager Gareth Southgate had no choice but to withdraw the defender. With the 27-year-old still undergoing trial, his selection came under serious scrutiny.

Maguire was found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and bribery. He was also handed a 21-month suspended sentence in the process.

The case is far from over but his club Manchester United have a decision to make as well.

Reports claim the Red Devils have no intention to strip Maguire from the captaincy but they might bow to pressure. A scenario that could be likely given the turn of events.

Danny Mills thinks stripping the defender off his captaincy (for the time being) could be a good thing for the player.

“I think whether Harry Maguire remains Manchester United captain is a very difficult one,” Mills told Sky Sports News.

“He is obviously still protesting his innocence, although in a court of law he has been found guilty.”

“Manchester United will deal with that as they see fit. It might be that the best thing to do at the moment is to take him out of the firing line.”

“Tell him: “We’re going to take the captaincy away, for now, until the appeal goes through, and see what the outcome of that is”.

Maguire and his team have launched an appeal but it could take a while before he is vindicated completely.

United begin their pre-season activity on the 2nd of September and the defender is expected to resume as well.
