The striker became only the second player in English football history to score 50 goals for the national team.

While proud of his latest feat, Harry Kane reserved most of his praise for the team’s character after a 1-1 draw against Germany on Tuesday.

The England captain scored a late second-half penalty to cancel out Jonas Hofmann’s opener for Germany to help the Three Lions get off the mark in Munich with their first point of the 2022/23 Nations League campaign.

In doing so, Kane joined Wayne Rooney as one of the only two England players to score 50 or more goals for the national team.

“I love scoring goals,” he told Channel 4. “I have always loved it, especially for my country. Whenever I can help the team, I am glad to do that.”

But the 28-year-old, who is now just three goals adrift of Rooney in the all-time England record goalscorers list, instead focused on praising the team’s resolve to earn a comeback draw.

“It is really important to show the mentality,” Kane said. “[At] 1-0 behind, we showed good character to get back into the game and get a result.

“We are playing against a very good Germany side. We still have important matches but the World Cup will be here before we know it.

“We kept going and played our best football in the last half-hour. [It was] a shame not to nick it at the end.”

Kane will hope to get back on the scoresheet again on Saturday to help England exact revenge on Italy for their third game of the UEFA Nations League.

It will be the first time the two teams face each other since Italy beat England on penalties in last summer’s Euro 2020 final at Wembley.
