Former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves has given his views behind Donny van de Beek’s troubles at Old Trafford.

Despite reported interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona, Van de Beek completed a big-money move from Ajax over to Manchester United in the summer.

The 23-year-old had established a reputation as one of the most exciting young midfielders in Amsterdam and hoped to build on his promise under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Opportunities to impress under the Red Devils boss, however, have been limited. He’s made just two starts in his seven appearances across all competitions and hasn’t made the line-up for a single Premier League match.

The latest blow came last weekend when Solskjaer left Van de Beek as an unused substitute. It’s led several high-profile figures, like Patrice Evra for instance, to ponder what led United to sign him in the first place.

And while Solskjaer has stated the Dutchman’s time will come, one can’t help but wonder why that isn’t now? After all, why spend so much money on one player and then hardly use him?

“Because they have two eights in there in Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba,” Hargreaves told BT Sport.

“Again it comes down to recruitment. Liverpool, when they need something, they get something they don’t have.

“I’m sure he is going to get a run of games but when you spend £40 million on a player you’d like to think he’d play, but I think Ole will find a place when it’s available.”

Van de Beek will hope his big chance comes on Wednesday evening’s Champions League game at home to RB Leipzig.
