Pep Guardiola wants a contract extension for Sergio Aguero but says the striker’s renewal will depend on his physical condition.

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero has forged his legacy as one of the best players in the club’s history, hitting 255 goals in 373 appearances to become their record goalscorer.

The Argentine’s contribution and impact on the team cannot be overstated, but he has struggled to maintain his form late in his career due to recurring fitness issues.

The 32-year old has gone eight games without finding the net in the Premier League and picked up a fresh knock in the 1-1 stalemate against West Ham last week.

Talks have surfaced that the aging striker is now dispensable and that the Sky Blues should move on from him. As it stands, he is due to become a free agent next summer as he has entered the final year of his contract at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola was recently asked to provide clarity on Aguero’s contract situation, but the Man City boss did little to help.

Guardiola told reporters, via Goal: “I don’t know, I don’t want to talk about it because I am not involved with this. If I should be involved in contracts, maybe the day should be 48 hours, not 24!

“We miss him a lot. What he has done for this club is outstanding, [he] will be a legend of this club. We want to enjoy him before but it depends on his physicality and his physical condition.”
