Reports have emerged claiming that Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi have already discussed a dream reunion at Manchester City.

Messi is on the lookout for a new club this summer after asking Barcelona to activate a clause in his contract that will allow him to walk out of Camp Nou this summer as a free agent.

Barcelona are understandably reluctant to part with the six-time Ballon d’Or winner. The club still hopes he’ll see out his career with them and, therefore, refuse to yield to his request.

The chiefs insist that said clause, which would allow Messi to leave at the end of the season, expired at the start of the summer; meaning any potential new clubs must pay his €700m release clause or wait until his contract expires in 2021.

Messi’s legal team, however, claim that the season extension has altered the expiry date of the clause. Hence, they expect Barcelona to honor the agreement and allow him to leave.

A parting of ways has seemed inevitable for quite some time following a disappointing season, which saw Barcelona finish trophyless for the first time since 2007/07, along with the Argentine’s fractured relationship with the club board.

According to Goal, Messi contacted his former Barca boss Guardiola regarding a possible reunion at Manchester City and was met with a very enthusiastic response.

The relationship between the two men has always remained close despite Pep leaving Barcelona in 2012, and it appears Messi would relish the chance to play under the Catalan once more.

The prospect of linking with fellow Argentine and friend Sergio Aguero in England also appeals to Messi, who would like to continue playing at the highest level in a league such as the Premier League.

City have made no offer yet, but they’ll be one of very few clubs capable of affording Messi and being able to interest him at the same time.
