Diego Godin discusses how he has managed to overcome the challenge of adjusting to his new surroundings at Inter Milan.
Inter Milan had high expectations from Diego Godin after luring him away from Atletico Madrid last summer.
It was expected that Godin becomes a rock at the heart of Inter’s defense, as he has been for several years at his former team, by forming a strong partnership with Stefan de Vrij and Milan Skriniar straightaway.
However, things didn’t go as planned. He struggled to adapt to his new manager’s three-man defensive system. Eventually, he lost his place in the starting XI to youngster Alessandro Bastoni.
But things have changed for better for the veteran center-back as of late. He has managed to win his manager’s trust and restore his place in the team.
Godin credits his resurrection to hard work, change in mentality, and to taking enough time to get the hang of Antonio Conte’s tactics.
“I’ve worked as hard as possible to put the Coach’s instructions into practice out on the pitch, they’re different to what I’d been used to previously,” he said, as per Sempreinter.
“I’ve had to work on both the mental and physical side of things. I think that I’ve overcome a personal challenge.
“I’ve now reached a point where it’s easier for me to help my teammates and be a leader on the pitch, where the coach’s ideas are implemented, and off it too.”
