Ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Manchester United, Phil Thompson gave his old club a timely reminder of how dangerous Cristiano Ronaldo is in big games.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s ability to turn up and star in big games has left Phil Thompson in a sweat.

The Liverpool legend opened up about his concern over Ronaldo ahead of his former club’s visit to Old Trafford for a Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday.

Despite playing as a lone striker most of the time, Ronaldo is still banging in the goals. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner even scored another match-winner in the 3-2 Champions League win over Atalanta on Wednesday with a brilliant header.

And given CR7’s proven record for club and country on the big stage, Thompson admits Liverpool could be in trouble.

“He knows all about them, he knows how big these [games] are,” the former Reds defender told LFC TV.

“Yes, dare I say it, he worries me because this fellow turns up in big games. We have seen that for Real Madrid and Juventus. He has done it in different countries and he did for his own country.

“This guy is a freak of nature and I mean it so kindly. He is 36 years of age and you see him being a match-winner for them the other night with an unbelievable header.

“I have nothing but praise for this guy.”

Thompson added: “Everybody is pinpointing his running stats. It’s probably the lowest of any striker in the Premier League, but it is what he produces in that box.

“If he scores goals and his running stats are down there and he keeps scoring goals in that box, everybody will forgive him. He will know, and he is one of those characters who will be saying we need to perform against Liverpool.”
