David Luiz is in the final months of his Arsenal contract and has been urged to re-join Benfica this summer by ex-teammate Nuno Gomes.

David Luiz is approaching the final months of his Arsenal contract as talks over his future remain uncertain.

Recent reports claimed the Gunners were considering a one-year contract extension for the Brazilian. However, there has been nothing concrete to confirm those reports are true in any way.

With Pablo Mari, Gabriel Magalhaes, Rob Holding available, and William Saliba to return from loan, the Gunners look stocked with defensive options ahead of next season.

David Luiz could see even less game time and it would make sense for him to consider a move elsewhere.

Prior to his move to former side Chelsea, the Brazillian spent five years at Benfica and played alongside Gomes.

The 33-year-old has bagged 166 goals from just short of 400 appearances for the Portuguese outfit.

Veteran forward Gomes has not decided on his own future yet. His contract with the Portuguese outfit also expires at the end of the season. However, he says he’ll like to see Luiz return to the club.

“Let’s see what happens. I remember that when he left Benfica he was very well adapted to Portugal in terms of his career on the pitch and his social life off the pitch,” he told Goal.

“He was like a Portuguese already in terms of his way of life and culture. He struggled a little bit to leave because he was doing very well and was very well settled here. But the offer that he received he couldn’t refuse.”

“But he always said that one day he wanted to return. I don’t know if it will be possible or not, but I would love it to happen.”
