In a recent interview, Inter Milan’s former president made a surprising title prediction for the Nerazzurri during this Serie A season.

It’s been nearly a decade since Inter Milan won their most recent title. Massimo Moratti was the president of the most successful era in the club’s rich history. During the 2009-10 season, they won a treble that shot them all the way up to the top of the world. They crowned an era of dominance in which they won five consecutive Serie A titles with the Champions League.

But they didn’t just win that tournament, they did it by beating one of the most impressive football clubs in the modern era: Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona. Moratti then sold the institution to Asian investors and completely disappeared from Inter’s radar. Now that the club is starting to make everybody feel they can win a trophy, Moratti speaks again. He praised both the manager and the club’s most prolific player.

Moratti hopes Inter can lift the Scudetto.

“The derby win was decisive in removing a risk, even if Milan are doing well,” Moratti told Radio24 via Football Italia. “But the distance put Inter in a safer position. “Inter have the character, as they demonstrated yesterday, and the intelligence to bring home the Scudetto, with due superstition. Conte has remained quite isolated from the club that has some problems, he is doing exceptional things.

“He has attracted all the responsibility of the championship. His role goes beyond that of the coach right now, he has all the merits. He doesn’t look at the past, but at the present and the present is going well. I must say that I started with the idea that Lukaku was not so strong, honestly,” Moratti added. “But he’s a very intelligent guy. He has improved a lot. He’s a point of reference for all the Inter fans now and he’s an incredible player.”
