In an interview picked up by Sport, one of FC Barcelona’s most decorated former players revealed he is hurt with the club’s current situation.

FC Barcelona is probably going through a dark era that hadn’t been around since the late ‘90s, one of its former starts laments how things have changed. During the time he played for the club, the Blaugrana were arguably the golden standard in world football. They had Pep Guardiola as the manager and he came along to help him win his second Champions League. We are talking about Javier Mascherano, who recently offered an interview about the club’s current situation.

When he was still around, the Argentine defender led the squad from the back line next to Gerard Pique. But everything took a drastic turn as soon as players like him, Andres Iniesta, or Xavi Hernandez left the club. That and the major changes in the philosophy model were the reasons Barcelona is far from its older days of glory.

Mascherano feels sorry for Barcelona’s present.

Mascherano explained on Sport: “It pains me that Barcelona has moved away from the model that made them such a great club. They prioritized other things and didn’t anything that made the club great, but different as well. If there was something Barcelona was doing differently than the rest, that was the model they adopted. They moved away from this model a long time ago.”

Mascherano also spoke about his friend, Leo Messi: “Every time he gets the ball, you get a feeling that something is going to happen. Being able to generate that feeling around the world can’t compare with anything else. He does it every three days for the last fifteen years. That’ why we are talking about someone different.

“He’s a very special person. But not because of the player he is. It’s because of how normal he is as a person. I’ve never met anybody that important for sports history who has that treatment with anybody he meets. He can come up to you and ask you for your opinion. Normally, greats like him never do that.”
