Timo Werner is going through a barren spell at Chelsea and former Blues midfielder Gus Poyet admits he is worried for the German forward.
Timo Werner’s current form in front of goal is already starting to be something to worry about, says Gus Poyet.
The German forward move to Stamford Bridge having built a reputation as one of Europe’s most prolific frontmen from his time at RB Leipzig.
With the Blues coughing out 50m for his signature, much was expected from the 24-year-old.
Indeed, Werner got off to a bright start at Chelsea and already had eight goals in total to his name by November 2020.
Since then, it’s been a barren run in front of goal with the forward struggling at all ends.
Across all competitions, Werner has only one goal for Chelsea in his last 16 appearances. That strike came against League Two side Morecambe in the FA Cup.
Former Blues midfielder Gus Poyet believes the German is struggling due to a lack of confidence and also due to a different approach to what made him a success at RB Leipzig.
“Werner is a bit of a worry,” the former Blues midfielder told Stadium Astro.
“When he arrived, I thought he was excellent – the pace, the direction and he was going for goal all the time. He lost that adrenaline and that action. Half-chances, but never hitting the target.”
Another ex-Blues midfielder in Michael Ballack also shares similar thoughts on Werner regarding a lack of confidence.
Regardless, Thomas Tuchel insists he has faith in Werner and will continue to back his compatriot with opportunities.
