In honor of an Argentine legend and football icon in Diego Maradona, Andre Villas-Boas has called for FIFA to retire the no.10 jersey.

Andre Villas-Boas is calling on all football clubs to retire the No.10 jersey in tribute to Diego Maradona.

The footballing icon sadly passed away on Wednesday after suffering from a cardiac arrest.

It comes after he recently underwent surgery to remove a blood clot on his brain last month.

For many, Maradona is one of the best to ever grace the sport. Skill, charisma, and a unique style were synonymous with the Argentine legend.

Among his many achievements was the World Cup victory in 1986 with Argentina and landing the Scudetto with Napoli twice.

A true legend of the game, Maradona has countless fans – including many current footballers, managers, and pundits. The football world yesterday mourned the loss of a player who defined the game to a great extent.

One of his many fans is Marseille boss Villas-Boas – who believes his famous no.10 shirt should be retired across football.

“It is very bad news, as well as the loss of a board member [at Porto] who was really important to me, who was the first person to open the door for me to the coaching world,” he said as quoted by Goal after his side’s 2-0 loss to Porto on Wednesday night.

“And Maradona yes it is tough news, I would like FIFA to retire the No.10 shirt in all competitions, for all teams.”

“It would be the best homage we could do for him. He is an incredible loss for the world of football.”
