Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey was the ‘signing of the summer’ and would improve the Gunners’ top-four hopes, says Kevin Campbell.

Arsenal have themselves a steal and a game-changer in the signing of Thomas Partey, says Campbell.

The Gunners ended their long chase of the Ghanaian by triggering his 45m release clause with Atletico Madrid. After a chase all through the summer, he finally signed for Arsenal on deadline day.

Partey has penned a four-year deal at the Emirates which will see him earn a whopping £260,000 a week (including bonuses).

The midfielder is expected to bring much-needed steel that has been lacking in midfield for the Gunners.

Ex-Gunner Campbell has been thoroughly impressed by what he’s seen of the Ghanaian. He admits he’s amazed he only cost £45m in the current market.

“Thomas Partey was the signing of the transfer window,” ex-Gunners frontman Campbell told GentingBet.

“For Arsenal to get him for £45m is a tremendous business – Arsenal almost went in with balaclavas on and stole him!”

“Atletico Madrid dropped the ball by only having a £45m release clause, he is a player that is a lot better than £45m in this current market, but that was the release cause and Arsenal met it and they have their man.”

Arsenal have failed to play Champions League football for the past three seasons and Campbell believes the arrival of Partey could boost the club’s top-four hopes.

“With Partey added to the mix, Arsenal need to be looking at finishing in the top four. Having that key figure defensively, someone who can protect the back is so important in modern day football and Arsenal haven’t had that in years – they’ve had players there who haven’t really liked playing there that have done a job but this is a level above.”

“If they don’t get top four that will be disappointing – it needs to be the focus of the team this year”
