Captain Cristiano made history, Lukaku’s red-hot form continued, Schick stunned Scotland – and the race to win the grand prize is now in full swing.
Portugal started the defense of their European crown in an emphatic fashion as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Hungary.
It appeared the fixture in Puskas Arena was set for a stalemate, with the scoreline tied a 0-0 with only about five minutes of normal time remaining, but three goals within eight minutes – a Raphael Guerreiro strike and a historical Cristiano Ronaldo brace – ensured all three points for Fernando Santos’ men.
Belgium also started their Euro 2020 campaign in style, recording a 3-0 win against Russia as Romelu Lukaku scored twice on either side of Thomas Meunier’s first-half effort.
Yet another 3-0 result was recorded in the first match of the tournament. Merih Demiral put the ball in his own net before Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne also got on the scoresheet as Italy eased past Turkey at Stadio Olimpico.
Patrik Schick took it upon himself to get the Czech Republic a perfect start and, consequently, to the top of Group D, scoring twice within ten minutes to seal a 2-0 win over Scotland.
Elsewhere in ‘group of death’ Group F, France narrowly got over the line against Germany, with a Mats Hummels own goal separating the two sides at the end of 90 minutes.
