Despite Paris Saint-Germain progressing into the next stage of the Champions League, Kylian Mbappe didn’t cut a happy figure afterward.

PSG manager Luis Enrique understood Kylian Mbappe’s frustration when he ordered the team to play for a draw against Borussia Dortmund, but he insisted it was a logical decision.

On Wednesday, PSG drew 1-1 against Dortmund to secure their last-16 spot as the Group F runners-up. They had 60% of the ball at Signal Iduna Park, but were wasteful in front of goal. In the 77th minute, Mbappe had a late goal ruled out for offside.

In the end, Parisians shared the spoils with Dortmund thanks to Warren Zaire-Emery’s strike. The midfielder’s goal canceled out Karim Adeyemi’s opening goal.

Knowing the draw would be enough to send them through into the last-16, Enrique played it safe. The coach ordered his players to focus on defense. This strategy was meant to avoid the risk of losing. Despite this, Mbappe didn’t react positively to the instruction and seemed upset when the final whistle blew.

“It is normal for the players to be frustrated,” Enrique said of Mbappe’s behavior after the game in Germany.

“We had five chances to score, five very clear chances.

“We would be a bit stupid to continue taking risks in the 85th minute with the possibility of conceding a goal and being eliminated.

“When a player is frustrated because he wants to score more goals, that’s when I intervene by having an overview to say, ‘Yes, we will win, but without taking excessive risks”

As the Group F runners-up, PSG could face Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Manchester City, Real Madrid, or Real Sociedad in the knockout phase of the Champions League.
